Project 008 - Neverending Style Oracle

Being from the 80's one of my favorite movies was The Neverending Story. Particularly the imagination process in coming up with the creatures, the characters, and the geography is pretty impressive. One of my favorite scenes is the oracle scene. A deadly woman-sphinx, whats not to like?

Current mini-project 001

So my cousin sent me a text regarding a JPEG of a squid. He said, "Make it look more menacing, and more symmetrical." Done deal.
I've had my share of redesigning gifs and whatnots. This one was pretty straight forward.

Sample:
What he found, and what the general idea was. And my rendition is as follows:

I had to do some research on what an actual squid looked like and wanted to have a more authentic feel. So I did half in Photoshop, size 10 brush, 300dpi 11x17. Then threw it in illustrator to vectorize it. Done deal.

Calavera sketch updated!

The calavera sketch is updated, so proud with how this came out. I wanted to do a background scene, or throw some colors swatches up just for contrast purposes. I suppose that'll be version skoctokull 1.2.

I started a new sketch the other day. Boredom at work got the best of me and I started to draw this.
So of course I took it home, scanned it in my computer and started to digitize it. Here is the work in progress.
I'll keep working on it little by little during my days off.

Gizelly

So my good friend Gisell told me about an appointment she has at my friends tattoo shop. She told me she wanted more or less a pocketwatch, roses, and some words. She didnt give me much detail, so I started just drawing. She's also a hair dresser, so I thought to include scissors in the drawing.
Here's more or less the Idea that came to my mind. Very rough sketch, 5 min job.

My new Ink

Family Crest
Got my family crest tattoo. More of like a tribute or in memory of. The carpenters triangle and brush represents my grandfather Jesus being a carpenter and a painter. (Haha, the pun that Jesus was a carpenter just dawned on me, btw) The scorpion represents my grandfather Francisco. The scorpion also stands for the desert land that Guanajuato is known for. Plus he had a keychain that had a scorpion in amber, and my brother woke up one morning in Salvatierra with a scorpion close to his head. Memories. The initials are an F and a J. The skull above represents that they have both passed away and the skull is looking down almost as if looking down on them. The banner for Quintana because both grandfathers are Quintana men. I love the way it came out. I'm slowly losing my boringness on my skin and getting things that mean a lot to me. If you get a scar from something that's a reminder. Why can't tattoos mean the same thing? Instead of having some random shape be the reminder, choose something yourself...

Random Drawing

Had this idea of drawing Mickey hands for some reason. And since I wear a LA hat it just made sense to put the two together. Kinda like Mickey representing his area.

Just a recap for those who tune in:

Project 001-Najwa's Snowflake: SHE GOT IT DONE. But...it wasn't colored. Apparently the tattooist thought the design was TOO INTRICATE and decided not to color it. Thats what I get for not having my tattoo studio up and running. She loved it, thats all I care about. If she's happy, I'm happy. I am super stoked about having my art on someone. It still looks good and Im glad/honored she asked me to be a part of the process.

Project 002-Dia De Los Muertos: Im still in the process of vectoring this piece. With work and moving, I havent really had a lot of time to settle down at the 'ol drawin board' and art away. I still love the piece, and am trying to make time to digitize it. Im doing it on Illustrator for those of you curious, and as you know the Pen Tool is as easy to use as it is unpredictable. If youve used it, you know exactly what I mean.

Project 003-Roberts Raven Skull: He loved it. It was a late Bday present, Charcoal on Canvas 24x36. He has a thing for skulls, and ravens are a sort of "grim mort" type of birds so that kind of went hand-in-hand.

Project 004-Julie's Turtle: I still havent received any reference photos or images that she wanted to use so im still doodling random turtles until she gives me those things.

Project 005-Sarah's Accordion: See Project 004.

Project 006-Napkin Octopus: I started combining different octopus sketches Ive done in the past and Ive come up with a tattoo idea that I would love to get done. It's an octopus wrapped around a crumbling anchor.  It has several connotations for which have too many details for me accurately portray in a post, but I will give updates on this.

Please feel free to leave comments, ask questions, start chats, etc. I am always open to meeting people and exchanging stories/ideas.

:Projekt 006: Octopus

So I was at the local casino the other night and decided to draw on a napkin. Surprise, surprise. My fascination with octopi always tends to lead me to draw them in different positions, colors, or wrapped up on different things, (like an anchor, possibly :projekt 007:). But this came out the other night.
I like the juxtaposition, the suction cups, whatnots. The color too. I only had the two colors so I might re-do this with some blues. We'll see. Let me know what you think.

Side Note: I'm still waiting on my friends accordion pics :projekt 005:, and Im still sketching turtle stuff for :projekt 004:

New Job

I started a new job on Monday. I am now officially getting paid to get people drunk. haha. That sounds weird saying it but its true, I am a bartender. It's a fun job so far. I was told that I was only going to work Monday and Tuesday just to try things out, but I was called in yesterday, (Wednesday), and now today. And yesterday was a busy day, despite me coming in for the morning shift. Then the Boss called me and asked if I could stay till closing because the other bartender is sick. My third day on the job and I'm already pulling a double. Granted there are only two bartenders in the entire establishment. And now apparently there's only one: Me. We will see how this goes...

2 Projekts and an update

Hey guys,
I hope February has been treating everyone great and smoothly. The Superbowl was a complete disappointment. Not in terms of the score although I'm not a 49ers fan so the Ravens winning was just a gloating factor. It was a disappointment as far as the commercials go. I'm sure there were a few that struck some emotional chords, such as the Clydesdale horses commercials, but none that were really mind-blowing. Although the 2 Broke Girls commercial was pretty intense. Anyways...

Projekt #004
Last week I was talking to my brother's girlfriend about tattoos. (She recently got a dia de los muertos skull tattoo with a rose, really nice) She told me she wanted to get one done to honor her sister. Her sister happens to love turtles and she and her sister are always tied to the hip. So, she wants a turtle tattoo, on her hip. Nice! I showed her snowflake design I did for my other friend and she really like the concept. Not too realistic, not too abstract. That's what she wanted to start off with. So I'm writing down this initial concept ideas and getting a few lines of thought down.

Projekt #005
Another friend of mine had asked me for a design of an accordion. Apparently her father has an accordion that she wants to get designed into a piece and is going to take some pics of the instrument for me. She wants it in done in "flash" style, so it'll have a "sailor jerry" feel to it. Im looking forward to doing that one for her.

Busy Schedule

To whom it may concern,  or to those who even bother to check my work here, (thank you btw): I recently started taking classes at the community college here in town. Specifically MicroBiology and Chemistry, you know, just for fun. Even though I may have a busy schedule with work, school, and homework, my artwork is what keeps me grounded. In the past few years I have noticed spurts of time when I'm not doing art,  and I can tell it really does help in the long run. It helps clear my head of clutter, ideas, works in progress (WIP's) and lets me focus on things that need my attention at the time. So as time goes on, I will definitely attempt, more and more, to stay on my art updates.
